HISTORY OF THE CIRCUIT

The Bugatti Circuit, or Circuit Bugatti, has a storied history that is deeply intertwined with the racing traditions of Le Mans. Officially opened in September 1966, the circuit was constructed to provide a permanent racing facility within the larger framework of the Circuit des 24 Heures. It was named after Ettore Bugatti, the esteemed founder of the Bugatti automobile company, paying homage to his contributions to the automotive world.

Designed by Charles Deutsch, the Bugatti Circuit features a combination of fast straights, technical corners, and challenging turns, stretching over 4.185 kilometres (2.6 miles). Unlike the Circuit de la Sarthe, which is primarily known for the annual 24 Hours of Le Mans endurance race, the Bugatti Circuit is a permanent track that integrates parts of the Circuit de la Sarthe but also has its unique sections.

Shortly after its inauguration, the Bugatti Circuit hosted the French Grand Prix in 1967, marking its significance in the motorsport world. Over the years, it has become a regular venue for the French round of the MotoGP World Championship, attracting significant international attention. Additionally, it hosts the 24 Heures Motos, an endurance motorcycle race that is part of the FIM Endurance World Championship.

Throughout its history, the Bugatti Circuit has seen numerous upgrades to enhance safety and meet modern racing standards. These improvements include better run-off areas, updated barriers, and enhanced facilities for both teams and spectators. The circuit remains a crucial part of the Le Mans racing culture, continuing to host a variety of motorsport events beyond the iconic 24 Hours race.

The Bugatti Circuit's contribution to motorsport is significant, providing a platform for testing and competition that has helped shape the development of racing technology and talent. Its legacy is celebrated not only in France but also in the global motorsport community, underscoring its enduring importance in the world of racing.
